"Outside New York"
September 23 - November 11 1978
The New Museum is happy to present paintings, drawings, and sculpture by six artists who are living and working outside New York. This is the first of a series of such exhibitions, whose aim is to show New Yorkers some of the extraordinary variety and vitality of the art being made around the country.
"The artists in this exhibition are not well-known, nor have they been exhibited extensively in their own regions. This is due to many factors, but principally because there are fewer opportunities to show - fewer museums and galleries - the farther away from major art centers one gets. The work of each of these artists defies easy categorization, providing welcome, eccentric vision which may in part result from their isolation from a larger art community." – “Outside New York” catalogue.
