On View
1984
In December of 1984, New Museum inaugurated a tripartite series of exhibitions, combining the existing WorkSpace and The Window series under the title On View, and constructing New Work Gallery on the main exhibition floor.1 The new gallery was intended to continuously feature work by artists who had not received significant exposure in New York City, and took up where the New Work/New York exhibition series left off.2 The WorkSpace gallery, located on the second level, was used for both site-specific installations and smaller exhibitions, while the Window on Broadway gallery continued to be an exhibition space which willfully engaged the general public.3

All three formats remained ‘on view’ for approximately three to eight weeks and were accompanied by a brief essay and documentation.4 This flexible exhibition program enabled curators to present immediately new work selected from artists’ studios.5

The ON VIEW nomenclature appears to have fallen out of favor after 1997, when Aleksandra Mir’s “Fashion Hats,” was the last exhbition to be listed in the Window on Broadway gallery as part of the ON VIEW program series.6
