"Love For Sale . . . Free Condoms Inside"
February 16 - April 7 1991
The window installation “Love for Sale…Free Condoms Inside,” presented by Gran Fury, a collaborative AIDS activist group, and P.O.N.Y. (Prostitutes of New York), an advocacy and support group for workers in the sex industry, is designed to realign commonly held perceptions of the sex trade and the spread of HIV. Set to dispel the image of prostitutes as villainous carriers of the disease, the installation, through instructional videos and advertisements, portrays prostitutes as sexual-health advocates, by the nature of their trade experts in the physical, psychological and social roles of sex. The intention is to provoke viewers into taking control of their lives by not allowing themselves to be misled by propagandistic media images of the AIDS crisis.
