“knot.project/N.Y.C.” placed a virtual object in actual space. The virtual object was a knot, and the actual space of intersection was Manhattan. The concept was based on a project which was realized for the Venice Biennale in 1995 and adapted to Manhattan’s urban space. Five intersections of virtual and real space were visible as video projections onto the street side windows of five different locations between Chinatown and Midtown. Each allowed a view into the interior of the knot and its interaction with the actual space. The invisible object’s topology mapped over Manhattan’s grid connected the five sites, their functions and structures and thus forms the contour of a virtual curve stretched over the city. The image of a face being displayed on the knots interior surface thus appeared only at the projection sites (which functioned like gates between visible and invisible) with the eyes of the face surfacing in one location, the mouth in another. The project reflected on issues of identity and its construction; of spaces in which human bodies move, appear and vanish, and of transgressions between real and virtual worlds.

The projections were displayed at 319 Grand Street, The New Museum of Contemporary Art, Cooper Union, HMV Record Store, and the Austrian Cultural Institute.
