Events: Artists Invite Artists
February 13 – March 5 1981
From February 13 to March 5, 1981, as part of the tripartite exhibition “Events: Fashion Moda, Taller Boricua, Artists Invite Artists,” the New Museum presented an installation of works curated by twelve artists who had participated in the Minorities Dialogues Series. In keeping with the exhibition format of the Events series, the New Museum reversed standard museum procedure by asking these artists to organize and present their own exhibition, thereby relinquishing curatorial control over its gallery space and the publication of the accompanying catalogue.

In the spring of 1980, the New Museum began hosting a bi-monthly discussion group which was organized in an effort to promote a familiarity between minority artists and the New Museum, and to encourage relationships between those artists and other interested parties. The ongoing series of meetings, called the Minority Artists’ Dialog, promoted and established an exchange of ideas and focused on common problems in the visual arts community, particularly in relation to the under-representation of non-white artists.

For the final installation in the “Events: Fashion Moda, Taller Boricua, Artists Invite Artists” exhibition, New Museum curator Lynn Gumpert, and Special Projects Coordinator Ed Jones asked twelve artists who had participated in the Minority Artists’ Dialog to invite two artists apiece. They were given total freedom in the selection of the exhibiting artists and, as usual, the only constraint on the work was the New Museum gallery space.
