Donald Dudley: Running Dream
February 22 – April 1 1984
In his installation piece, Running Dream, Donald Dudley attempted to elicit an emotional response from the viewer by altering their perception of deep and shallow space. He stated that the installation was “neither painting nor sculpture, but more drawing in and on space.” Applying his odd shaped paintings directly to the gallery walls and floor, Dudley built a room-size composition of interlocking geometric elements and chalked line drawings which gave the illusion of three-dimensional form. The right-angle corners in his work appeared as hollow boxes, and his shapes hung on the wall as if momentarily magnetized in place.
