Wynne Greenwood: Stacy ... Kelly
Stacy and Kelly, two euphonious and androgynous exhibition titles that signal a re-emergence for artist and musician Wynne Greenwood who (reluctantly) garnered fame touring the country as the art band Tracy + the Plastics, from 1999 to 2006. Nearly ten years after Tracy’s end, two distinct visual arts institutions - the Douglas F Cooley Memorial Art GallerY, Reed College, Portland, and the New Museum, New York - Joined forces through two independent yet interrelated exhibition projects in order to support Greenwood in weaving her artistic legacy into the fabric of the present and the furture. One of our shared goalshas been to increase national and international awareness of Greenwood’s significant contribution to contemporary performance art, video production, and larger queer culture. Greenwood’s work, birthed and nutured in the analog ‘90s, has made a significan yet somewhat underrecognized impact on the ways in which artists negotiate representation and subjectivity in the digital era. Wynne Greenwood was a true “social media” artist before the term existed, deploying technology to explore constructions of the self and to address her concerns around queeness, collaboration, and survival.
