Exhibitions
Bili Bidjocka, Los Carpinteros, Rivane Neuenschwander
June 18 – September 20 1998
This exhibition consists of three untitled installations by five young artists - three of whom collaborate as a group - from Cameroon, Cuba, and Brazil. Despite their disparate backgrounds, Bili Bidjocka, the collaborative group Los Carpinteros, and Rivane Neuenschwander belong to a new generation of artists sharing a visual language that refutes standard notions of national identity and style. This is the first New York exhibition of these artists, whose works have been shown in international biennials and similar venues during the past few years. Conceived and produced for presentation at the New Museum, these new installations offer U.S. viewers the chance to experience firsthand issues of form and content raised by the transformation of the art world into a loosely connected global community.
