Jason Middlebrook: Dig
October 5 2001 – February 3 2002
Using artificial materials to build fake layers of earth, stones, plants, roots, and wild ground cover, New Yorker Jason Middlebrook has created Dig, a site-specific project designed for the ledge above the New Museum Store. The installation mimics and excavation site as if a hole were cut directly through the floor of the Museum revealing the ground beneath. Dig continues the artist’s exploration of the division between nature and culture and brings to life the physical and geologic history lying below the steel and concrete of New York City. Dig is organized by William Stover.
