Lynn Gumpert was hired as Curator at the New Museum in 1980. Gumpert curated landmark exhibitions, such as “Persona,” 1981, and “Golub,” 1984. She was influential in expanding the Museum’s curatorial scope to include artists outside the United States, with exhibitions such as “A Distanced View: One Aspect of Recent Art from Belgium, France, Germany, and Holland,” 1986, and “Christian Boltanski: Lessons of Darkness.” Gumpert was the New Museum’s first Senior Curator, starting in 1984, a position she held until she departed in 1988.
