Guthrie Lonergan’s practice is based around the appropriation of material that he finds online and reconfigures and re-presents in ways that speak to issues of identity, originality, and creativity in the digital age. In his work Myspace Intro Playlist (2006) Lonergan has compiled a series of videos made by users of the popular social networking site MySpace, in which they introduce themselves to their largely anonymous Internet audience. Inscribed within these quasi-anthropological documents are the world-altering paradigm shifts that have occurred in the nature of self-presentation, identity formation, privacy and social interaction as a result of Web 2.0 platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and, of course, MySpace. Through the act of removing these introduction videos from their original context, Lonergan enjoins us to examine the ways in which these users attempt to construct convincing identities.
