Monique Jenkinson has performed at ODC Theater, CounterPULSE, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, the de Young Museum, and Trannyshack in San Francisco; Danspace Project, Howl Festival and the Stonewall in New York; the Met Theatre in Los Angeles; the Coachella music festival; and in Reykjavik, Amsterdam, and London. Jenkinson’s drag queen alter ego Fauxnique made history as the first woman to win San Francisco’s infamous Miss Trannyshack Pageant. She appears in the documentary Filthy Gorgeous: the Trannyshack Story and the April/May ’08 issue of Bust magazine. Jenkinson is a current artist in residence at ODC Theater, a past artist in residence at CounterPULSE, and a 2007 recipient (with mentor Keith Hennessey) of the CHIME Grant. Her solo and collaborative work has also received support from the Zellerbach Family Foundation and Theatre Bay Area.

Before Narcissister called herself Narcissister, she was a professional modern dancer. Her most formative training took place at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center. Among her professional highlights was being selected to perform with the Ailey company in Memoria, one of Ailey’s seminal pieces, touring Europe as a dancer in a German rock-opera, and performing in industrial work for Mercedes Benz. In addition to being a featured performer at The Box NYC, she has presented work in the popular Weimar New York and Tingle Tangle shows, at The Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art, Deitch Projects, Joe’s Pub, and at many of New York’s most popular performance venues. She was selected for a performance art residency organized by Art in General and the HDLU/Croatian Association of Artists in Zagreb, Croatia this Spring. As part of her residency she will present her first solo evening length show at the Student Centar Theatre, a venue historically infamous for housing radical performance work. Her art film The Self-Gratifier won an award for “Best Use of a Sex Toy” at The 2008 Good Vibrations Erotic Film Festival. In April she will be awarded a Backstage Magazine “Bistro Award” for Outstanding Vaudeville/Burlesque Performance, a category created especially to honor Narcissister’s performance work.
