First Saturdays for Families: Time Travel

March 4 2017

Join us for a family workshop offered in conjunction with the exhibition “Raymond Pettibon: A Pen of All Work,” on view at the New Museum through April 9, 2017. For over thirty years, Raymond Pettibon has been chronicling the history, mythology, and culture of America with a prodigious and distinctive voice. Through his drawings’ signature interplay between image and text, he moves between historical reflection, emotional longing, poetic wit, and strident critique.

On the second floor of the exhibition, guests will view a group of drawings the artist made when he was a child, which his mother then saved. Pettibon then came back to the drawings forty years later to add new captions, greatly changing our reading of the narratives. Families will have a similar opportunity to time travel together when adults and kids collaboratively produce zines that intertwine text and image stemming from childhood memories.

New Museum First Saturdays for Families are free of charge. This program is designed and recommended for families with children aged between four and twelve years, and includes free New Museum admission for up to two adults per family. Children under eighteen are always admitted free. No preregistration is required. Space is limited, and tickets are given out on a first-come, first-served basis. Your entire party must be present; tickets will not be given to partial parties.
