In 2009, the New Museum launched RE:NEW RE:PLAY, a series of month-long residencies and associated public programs that took place in the New Museum theater. By bringing various kinds of performing artists into an art museum context, RE:NEW RE:PLAY sought to reopen a dialogue between the visual and performing arts and provide performing artists with a new context for considering the cultural impact of their work. Over the course of their residencies, artists had the opportunity to allow critical discourse to affect the development of their work, as well as the opportunity to expand and challenge assumptions about performance on their own terms. The New Museum theater acted as a testing ground for these new dialogues and experiments.
