Perejaume: Pintura i Representació
May 11 – August 18 1991
From May 11 to August 18, 1991, as part of the On View program, the New Museum presented an installation piece by Perejaume that raised provocative questions about the nature of art viewing and presentation. For Pintura i Representació, Perejaume installed rows of theater seats in the Window on Broadway. Museum patrons were allowed to sit in the window, and thus became at once spectators of the street action and a spectacle for the passersby, just as the passersby also become doubly observer and observed. By way of a kind of conceptual double entendre, the project called attention to the indexical nature of the museum and inverted the conventional passive role of the viewer, dynamically engaging the activity on the street to extend the museum’s boundaries as a site for the experience of art.
