Events: En Foco
June 11 – July 20 1983
From June 11 to July 20, 1983, as part of the exhibition “Events: En Foco, Heresies Collective,” the New Museum presented an installation of works curated by the nonprofit En Foco, Inc. In keeping with the exhibition format of the Events series, the New Museum reversed standard museum procedure by asking these artists to organize and present their own exhibition, thereby relinquishing curatorial control over its gallery space and the publication of the accompanying catalogue.
A Bronx-based nonprofit established in 1974, En Foco, Inc. provides professional recognition, honoraria, and assistance to photographers through exhibitions, workshops, events and publications. At the New Museum, Charles Biasiny-Rivera and Frank Gimpaya of En Foco, Inc. organized a juried installation of sixty-five photographs. Entitled La Gran Pasión, this presentation of powerful visual documents explored the intensity and richness of the Latino experience.
