The New Museum’s inaugural exhibition at the 65 Fifth Avenue location, “Early Works by Five Contemporary Artists,” opened in November 1977.¹ It was planned as the first in a series whose intention was, periodically, to re-examine early work by artists both in and out of New York City.² The series comprises only two exhibitions, the first in 1977 and the second in 1982.
